Jagjit Singh was born on February 8, 1941, in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India. His father, Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman, was a government employee, and his mother, Bachan Kaur, was a housewife. He had four sisters and two brothers. At a young age, Singh showed a deep inclination towards music, and his family recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion.
He started his musical training by learning classical music under the guidance of Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma. However, it was during his college years at D.A.V. College in Jalandhar that he discovered his love for ghazals. Inspired by the works of renowned ghazal singers like Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali, Singh found his true calling in this genre.
Career Breakthrough and Collaboration with Chitra Singh:
In 1965, Jagjit Singh moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) to pursue a career in music. He faced initial struggles but soon caught the attention of music directors and producers with his unique voice and interpretation of ghazals. His breakthrough came in 1976 when he released his first album, “The Unforgettable.” The album became an instant hit, and Jagjit Singh‘s popularity soared.
In the late 1970s, he formed a highly successful partnership with his wife, Chitra Singh. Together, they created numerous albums that revolutionized the ghazal genre. Their soul-stirring duets and heartfelt performances struck a chord with listeners, earning them immense acclaim and a massive fan following. Some of their popular albums include “A Milestone,” “Someone Somewhere,” and “Beyond Time.”
Personal Tragedy and Solo Career:
Tragedy struck the couple in 1990 when their only son, Vivek, met with a tragic accident and lost his life. The incident left Jagjit and Chitra Singh shattered, and they took a hiatus from music. In 1991, they made a comeback with the album “Sajda” as a tribute to their late son. However, the personal loss had a profound impact on their lives, and they decided to pursue separate musical careers.
Jagjit Singh continued his solo career and released several successful albums. He experimented with different musical styles and collaborated with talented artists from various genres. His ability to blend traditional ghazals with contemporary elements made his music appealing to a wider audience. Some of his notable solo albums include “Mirage,” “Marasim,” and “Kahkashan.”

Unfortunately, he couldn’t recover from the critical condition and breathed his last on October 10, 2011. His demise left a void in the music industry, but his soulful music continues to resonate with fans, old and new.
